THE ROLE OF PROBATION STAFF
Probation staff work with offenders to address the issues which triggered their offending, and help reduce the chances of them offending again. In many cases this will involve an offender having to attend a specific programme, the attendance of which is a legal requirement of their sentence. Failure to comply with any aspect of an Order will result in the offender being returned to court for re-sentence.
Probation staff also assist offenders to access employment, training and education opportunities, which in turn can help them become better skilled, more employable and less likely to resort to crime in the future. This helps minimise risk to the public - a key priority for the Service. Government research shows that stable employment is a key component in the reduction of reoffending.
There are around 720 staff currently working for the organisation.
